ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE
Our residency program is a means of supporting Canadian experimental audio art and encouraging emerging talent. It is aimed at Canadian audio artists with some background in audio art production and who have an interest in the medium of radio. Past artists-in-residence have included Robert Kozinuk, Sylvi MacCormac, Patrick Dubois, David Evans, Stefan Udell, Cecilia Greyson, FlatGrey, Phil Thomson, Liam Wake, souns, Soressa Gardner, Velveeta Krisp, and Anne F.
Residency Terms
- Each residency is approximately six weeks long.
- The Artist-in-Residence (AIR) will craft a completed, stand-alone, audio-based project suitable for radio broadcast.
- The project cannot be a component of another artwork, though it may be complemented by other media.
- Projects must be produced in CFRO radio's production facility Control Room B. The AIR will be required to log their hours in the studio to demonstrate their use of the studio. Works produced predominantly at home or at another studio will not be accepted.
- CRES Media Arts Committee retains the rights to the premiere broadcast and/or public performance of the completed audio project, to post the piece on the MAC website, and to include the project as part of a internationally distributed CD. All other copyright remains with the artist.
- Failure to complete any portion of the residency within a reasonable time frame will mean forfeiting some or all of the artist fee.
- The successful applicant will be required to sign a contract indicating their agreement to and acceptance of their obligations as a MAC AIR.
- We welcome applications from all Canadian artists, though we are unable to cover travel costs for artists from outside Vancouver. Howvever, the interval between the deadline and the start date is now such that the successful applicant can apply for a grant to cover travel expenses.
Benefits
- An artist fee of $1,200, disbursed in 2 payments of $600 each: one midway through the residency, and one at the completion of the residency.
- Training in the use of Control Room B studio equipment.
- First Priority Access to Control Room B and portable recording equipment.
- Artists will also be invited to showcase their piece at a public listening event along with the other AIRs and commissionees from the same year.
Application Process
Please download the following application form:

MAC Artist In Residence Applicaton .doc
- Applicantions are due by 5pm on August 1st 2008
- Applicants must submit their applications to the MAC mailbox at CFRO FM. CFRO is located at:
#110 - 360 Columbia Street, Vancouver, British Columbia, V6A 4J1.
-
The proposals will be adjudicated according to the following criteria: merit of project proposal; merit of audio support material; originality of proposal in relation to past projects; progressiveness/"ground-breaking-ness" of proposal; clarity of vision/feasibility of proposal; benefit of proposed project to artist/MAC/sound-art community in Vancouver; and effective use of Studio B gear, as indicated by proposal.
-
CV's, bios, or other information should be kept to a minimum and need not be included at all.
-
Applications missing any essential material will be considered incomplete and not be adjudicated.
-
It is not necessary to have vast audio/musical experience in order to become a resident, and the successful applicant will be given basic training in the use of the studio, but some background in sound studio work is expected, as tech support will not always be available on demand. MAC is primarily interested in engaging, original, and clearly defined project proposals which test the boundaries of audio/radio art, and we will weigh the value of your proposal more heavily than your technical background.
